LWA Membership Levels:
Ligonier Specialty Gardener’s own Donald Carey started lending his time and green thumb to LWA several years ago by helping to maintain the organization’s many garden projects. One such project started taking shape in the summer of 2017, when Don started to clear the brush, brambles and poison ivy from the steep hillside in front of the farmhouse. A work in progress, colorful focal points are now visible on the hillside that include dwarf evergreens, hardy perennial grasses, and other heritage pollinator plants. Don adds, “I’m blessed to have the opportunity to put my education, skills and love of nature to good use. A true labor of love.”
Each spring, over 300 volunteers from the Latrobe and Ligonier communities come out in force to clean up an abundance of roadside litter from more than 50 miles of area roadways! For 15 years, LWA has been organizing the Great Ligonier Valley Cleanup and Latrobe Corridor Cleanup events for our Earth Day celebration. Individuals and organizations from throughout the watershed join together for this one-day cleanup event that collectively removes hundreds of pounds of litter annually from our roadsides. While it is unfortunate that many people contribute to the litter problem each year, we are extremely grateful that volunteers care enough to make our watershed beautiful through these events.
With the recent launching of LWA’s new Integrated STEM/Environmental Education Programs at the Watershed Farm, we are now reaching more than 2,000 students each year! While extremely exciting, we also very busy during the months of April, May, September and October. Extra hands are always welcome (and needed) to help with our after school science club and other field trip programs. Teaching experience is not required, however volunteers will need to provide evidence of a background check and child abuse history clearances to work with students.
